The Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ) demonstrated its strong commitment to mental health advocacy and suicide prevention by participating in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) “Out of the Darkness Community Walk” on Sept. 6. The event marked the seventh consecutive year that Atlantic City casinos have joined forces for the event, with over 750 participants from all properties.
The initiative was spearheaded by team members from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, whose ongoing dedication is fueled by personal experiences with loved ones lost to suicide. Under the leadership of General Manager Michael Sampson, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City has been a driving force, helping to raise over $1 million since the walk’s inception.
Sampson emphasized the collective impact of the industry’s participation: “The collective effort of every Atlantic City casino to participate in the Out of the Darkness Community Walk this year underscores our industry’s commitment to this vital cause. We are proud to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and their important work in suicide prevention and mental health awareness.”
Mark Giannantonio, president of the Casino Association of New Jersey, added, “Each year, our casinos unite to shine a light on an issue that touches far too many lives. Our ongoing commitment to suicide prevention is about more than just raising funds. It’s about fostering connection, awareness, and support for those who need it most.”
Suicide remains a critical public health issue. In 2023, more than 49,000 Americans died by suicide, making it the 11th leading cause of death nationwide and the second leading cause for individuals aged 10 to 34. In New Jersey, it ranks among the top three causes of death for ages 10 to 24.
The AFSP works tirelessly to educate the public, empower communities, and provide support to those affected by suicide. Through research, advocacy, and various programs, the organization aims to prevent suicide and strengthen mental health resources.
Robert Gebbia, AFSP Chief Executive Officer, expressed profound gratitude for the continuous support. “Since 2018, Hard Rock has shown not only incredible generosity, but a genuine belief in the mission and values that guide our work,” Gebbia said. He added that such partnerships help save lives, restore hope, and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide.
