Centenary University mobilizes students and community to combat hunger and homelessness

Centenary University recently concluded an intensive week of civic engagement, education, and service to observe Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week. The initiative, facilitated by the University’s Hunger Task Force and Civic Engagement Center, aimed to raise consciousness about the growing issues of food insecurity and housing instability both on campus and in the broader community.

The week’s efforts demonstrated Centenary’s commitment to service through a variety of educational and hands-on projects.

“Through service, education, and collaboration, Centenary University demonstrated its dedication to supporting those affected by hunger and homelessness,” said Jamie Weingarten, Director of Student Activities. “The partnerships and projects developed during Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week will continue to strengthen the University’s efforts to combat food insecurity on campus and within the broader community.”

A key component of the week was dedicated to ensuring students were aware of available food assistance. Centenary hosted Nicole Fernandez, the NORWESCAP SNAP navigator for Warren County, who provided students with information on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), eligibility requirements, and the application process. This effort addresses the widespread issue of students being unaware that they may qualify for food aid based on their living or financial situations.

Additionally, Campus Life launched a coordinated social media campaign across university platforms to encourage dialogue and provide actionable steps for students to donate, volunteer, or seek help from the University’s resources.

Centenary deepened its commitment to service through several collaborative projects:

  • Thanksgiving Meal Bags: Students and representatives from the SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) partnered with Trinity Church to assemble and distribute Thanksgiving meal bags, providing families in need with the resources to celebrate with dignity.

  • Cyclone Kitchen Support: The University launched a community partnership with Faithful Food Share, which committed to donating individually wrapped bagels each week to the Cyclone Kitchen, Centenary’s on-campus food pantry. This reliable donation provides a comforting and easy meal option for students struggling with consistent access to meals.

  • Canned Food Drive: The Psychology Club kicked off a campuswide canned food drive that will continue to collect donations for local food pantries facing increased demand this year.

The Multicultural Club added a cultural dimension to the week by hosting its annual Multicultural Feast, where students shared dishes representing their heritage. All leftover food from the event was made available to students through the Cyclone Kitchen, maximizing support while underscoring the University’s commitment to sustainability.

Centenary University, founded in 1867, is dedicated to empowering students through extraordinary learning opportunities and innovative programs, including the world’s first Ph.D. and Master of Arts in Happiness Studies.
