Hoboken Library Director Jennie Pu takes on national role to champion public libraries

Hoboken Public Library Director Jennie Pu has been named the new Chair of the Federal Advocacy Task Force for the Urban Libraries Council (ULC). This appointment puts Pu at the forefront of a national effort to secure critical funding and support for public libraries across North America, highlighting her leadership on a national stage.

In her new role, Pu will be a key voice for libraries in Washington D.C., working to influence federal policies and ensure that libraries are recognized as essential community infrastructure. The task force focuses on advocating for issues like literacy, workforce development, digital access, and mental health resources. This is particularly important right now, as federal funding for libraries has faced potential cuts.

“Public libraries are foundational to American communities,” Pu said. She added that she’s “honored to lead ULC’s federal advocacy at this pivotal moment” to help ensure libraries “remain strong, adaptable, and essential pillars” for future generations.

Pu’s new position is a testament to her impressive track record in Hoboken. Since becoming director in 2021, she has transformed the library into a vibrant hub for the community. Under her leadership, the library has undergone a multimillion-dollar historic restoration, eliminated overdue fines, and launched innovative programs like pop-up libraries in schools and Hoboken’s first free makerspace. She was also instrumental in having Hoboken designated as New Jersey’s first “book sanctuary” city, a move that has inspired other libraries across the state to follow suit. For her efforts, she was named the 2024 Librarian of the Year by the New Jersey Library Association.

Brooks Rainwater, President and CEO of the ULC, praised Pu’s appointment, noting her “wealth of experience and political acumen.” He emphasized the importance of having urban libraries represented in federal policy discussions to advocate for their vital role in everything from digital inclusion to workforce development.

Through this new national role, Pu will continue to amplify the work of libraries, demonstrating their impact as centers for opportunity, equity, and democracy. Her leadership will help shape policy and secure a more sustainable future for public libraries, ensuring they can continue to serve their communities effectively.
