Origin
The Wetlands Institute was founded in 1969, prior to the environmental movement and when wetlands were being filled without understanding of the broader services they provide for coastal resilience, commercial fisheries and the economic underpinnings of the coastal economy. Major storm damage was occurring, and the institute was founded to address mitigating these issues.
Mission/vision
It advances its mission of promoting appreciation, understanding and stewardship of coastal and wetland ecosystems through programs in applied research, conservation and education. It is solving complex problems facing coastal communities posed by the climate challenge with actionable coastal restoration projects. It serves residents, families, students and tourists from the tri-state area.
