Jersey City’s efforts under Mayor Steve Fulop to become more park friendly have taken a major jump nationally, moving from 47th to 31st over the past five years.
That number may soon jump again.
Last week, Jersey City celebrated the recently completed renovations of two major parks. With more than $2.6 million total invested, the city transformed Pavonia Marion Park and Thomas McGovern Playground.
Here’s a look at the efforts:
Pavonia Marion Park
Located in the Marion section of Jersey City, Pavonia Marion Park underwent a $1.8 million renovation. The redesigned outdoor space now features a wide range of improvements aimed at creating an inclusive and sustainable public park for all, with:
- Expanded playground equipment for multiple age groups.
- New basketball courts with lighting for extended play.
- Benches, shaded areas, and green infrastructure for stormwater management.
- Improved landscaping, lawn panels, and site circulation.
- Upgraded electrical and water services, including a new drinking fountain and irrigation system.
- New fencing, sports lighting, and a refreshed flagpole.
Thomas McGovern Playground
Known locally as Country Village Park, Thomas McGovern Playground has been reimagined with a $862,000 investment.
Renovations focused on a full in-kind replacement of the park’s popular play features:
- Age-appropriate play structures for children 2-5 and 5-12 years old.
- New swings, benches, and safety surfacing.
- A new interactive splash pad for warm-weather play.
Fulop was thrilled to see the parks open.
“Investments in our parks are investments in our people,” he said. “These two renovated parks are prime examples of how we are working together with residents to reimagine our public spaces in a way that is community-driven, environmentally responsible, and future-focused.”
