Middlesex College, New Jersey’s largest two-year community college, announced the appointment of Lynarkah Stephen as its new executive director of human resources.
Following a nationwide search, Stephen was selected for her extensive experience and leadership in human resources within the higher education sector. Her role will be pivotal in shaping the college’s comprehensive human resources program and ensuring it aligns with the institution’s strategic goals.
Stephen brings a wealth of experience from her previous roles at prominent educational institutions. She has held key HR leadership positions at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) and Montclair State University and currently serves as a consultant for The Goddard School. Her background includes leading initiatives to boost employee engagement, streamline operations, and promote a diverse and inclusive campus environment—all of which are crucial for a thriving educational community.
Middlesex College President Mark McCormick expressed his enthusiasm for Stephen’s appointment. “Lyn brings extensive experience in higher education and a strong track record of strategic leadership in human resources,” McCormick said. “Her commitment to fostering inclusive, supportive workplace environments will be instrumental as we continue to attract and retain top talent. I look forward to working with her to advance a culture where every employee feels valued and empowered to contribute to our mission.”
Stephen’s appointment is a strategic move for Middlesex College as it looks to strengthen its workforce and foster a supportive environment for its faculty and staff.
“As a leader, the moments I value most are when my presence helps others feel seen and inspired to be their best selves,” Stephen said, highlighting her collaborative and empowering leadership philosophy.
In her previous roles, Stephen was instrumental in guiding HR practices and supporting large, unionized workforces. Her work at TCNJ involved strengthening employee engagement and streamlining operations, while at Montclair State she provided HR guidance across six different divisions. As an HR consultant for The Goddard School, she has focused on talent strategy, performance management, and employee engagement.
Stephen is well-credentialed for the role, holding a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in legal studies from Montclair State University. She is also a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and holds other key certifications, including the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certificate. Her appointment marks a new chapter for Middlesex College’s human resources department, signaling a renewed focus on strategic leadership and fostering a positive, inclusive workplace.
