In a significant step toward a fully modernized transit network, NFI Group Inc. (NFI) announced that its subsidiary, New Flyer of America Inc., received a major follow-on order from NJ TRANSIT for 375 Xcelsior® 40-foot clean-diesel buses.
This latest procurement completes the base order of 550 buses from a landmark contract awarded in 2024. The move reinforces New Jersey’s aggressive “NJT 2030” strategic plan to replace every aging vehicle in its fleet by 2031, ensuring a younger, more reliable, and environmentally conscious bus network.
The 375-bus order follows previous phases executed in late 2025 and marks the fulfillment of the initial firm commitment between the state and the manufacturer. While the base order of 550 buses is now fully accounted for, NJ TRANSIT retains options for an additional 750 units to support future growth and replacement needs.
“This additional order underscores NJ TRANSIT’s unwavering commitment to our customers,” NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kris Kolluri said. “Modernizing our bus fleet is a critical investment… these new buses move us closer to our goal of a fully modernized bus fleet by 2031.”
The Xcelsior® platform represents the cutting edge of clean-diesel technology. These Tier-4 emission buses are designed to be significantly cleaner than the Tier-1 and Tier-2 models they are replacing, contributing to a substantial reduction in the agency’s carbon footprint.
| Feature | Impact & Benefit |
| Clean-Diesel Tech | 95% reduction in NOx and 80% reduction in particulate matter. |
| Low-Floor Design | Includes “SmartRider” ramps for faster, more accessible boarding. |
| Safety Upgrades | Features blind-spot cameras and pedestrian turn-warning systems. |
| Rider Amenities | Equipped with USB charging ports and energy-efficient LED lighting. |
Beyond transportation, the contract serves as a boon for domestic manufacturing. The buses will be produced at NFI’s facilities, securing local jobs and strengthening the North American supply chain.
Chris Stoddart, president of North American Bus and Coach at NFI, highlighted the durability of the fleet: “Built for durability and long service life, these new buses will help NJ TRANSIT continue providing the reliable, essential transportation services that keep communities and economies moving every day.”
With over 925,000 weekday trips across the state, the modernization of these 40-foot “workhorse” buses ensures that the nation’s largest statewide transit system remains prepared for the high-demand urban environments of the next decade.
