NJR announces $50K donation to Ducks Unlimited for Cattus Island restoration

New Jersey Resources on Tuesday announced a $50,000 donation to Ducks Unlimited to spearhead the protection and enhancement of coastal habitats at Cattus Island in Ocean County.

The funding, provided through NJR’s Coastal Climate Initiative (CCI), is earmarked for the critical early stages of wetlands restoration. This includes planning, engineering design, surveying, and permitting for four specific project areas covering approximately 35 acres.

Cattus Island serves as northern Barnegat Bay’s largest contiguous salt marsh habitat and acts as a vital natural buffer for the Toms River area. By partnering with Ducks Unlimited, NJR aims to:

  • Restore tidal marshes and mitigate coastal erosion.

  • Foster resilient habitats for local wildlife.

  • Protect surrounding communities from the increasing impacts of climate change and storm surges.

“Giving back and investing in the communities we serve is a core value of our company,” Steve Westhoven, president and CEO of New Jersey Resources said. “Together with organizations like Ducks Unlimited, we are making a difference for us all for the long term.”

The announcement coincided with the release of NJR’s 17th annual Corporate Sustainability Report, which highlights a record-breaking year for the company’s environmental and social governance. In fiscal year 2025, NJR reported a record $98 million investment in energy efficiency, the highest in its history.

Other key achievements from the 2025 report include:

  • Emissions reduction: The installation of carbon reduction systems at operations centers and a commitment to maintaining a low leak rate of 0.06 leaks per mile.

  • Community impact: Over 4,200 hours of employee volunteer service and nearly $2 million in direct funding to local nonprofits.

  • Clean energy: The delivery of NJR’s highest annual installed solar capacity to date, exceeding 93 megawatts.

Jim Feaga, Regional Biologist at Ducks Unlimited, emphasized that the project “exemplifies the power of partnership” in ensuring that vital salt marshes continue to provide habitats and coastal protection for generations to come.
