Optimum, a provider of fiber internet and mobile services, has triggered its comprehensive storm preparedness protocol on Thursday as a “dangerously cold” Arctic air front advances across the United States.
The front is projected to bring hazardous heavy snow, ice, and sub-zero temperatures to several of Optimum’s key markets, including New Jersey.
With 2026’s first major winter event looming, Optimum’s network teams are working around the clock to safeguard infrastructure. The company’s strategy focuses on maintaining connectivity through extreme conditions:
-
Strategic fueling: Field teams are placing 500-gallon fuel tanks on standby at critical network facilities to ensure backup generators can run indefinitely if the power grid fails.
-
Mobile connectivity: Wi-Fi trailers and charging stations have been staged in high-risk zones to provide emergency internet access to affected communities.
-
Specialized standby: Fiber experts, outside plant technicians, and construction crews are being pre-positioned in “response-ready” locations to assess and repair damage immediately once conditions are safe.
-
Infrastructure hardening: Critical equipment is being insulated or moved to prevent the mechanical failures often associated with record-breaking cold.
“At Optimum, we understand that staying connected… is critical—especially during severe weather events,” Sean O’Connell, senior vice president at Optimum said. “In the event of an impact, our teams will respond as safely and quickly as possible.”
Optimum reminded customers that restoration often requires a “staged response.” In areas where ice or snow has brought down utility poles, internet technicians must often wait for local power companies to declare an area safe before they can begin re-stringing fiber or replacing hardware.
To minimize the impact of the Arctic blast, Optimum encourages all residents and business owners to take the following steps:
