Pennsauken-based Puratos USA has officially opened a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Pennsauken, marking the company’s first plant in the United States dedicated exclusively to bakery glaze production.
The Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) facility brings advanced manufacturing closer to U.S. customers, aiming to reduce supply chain risk and accelerate market responsiveness for industrial bakers. The grand opening, held on Oct. 27, was celebrated with a unique tradition: U.S. Congressman Donald Norcross (D-NJ) cut a giant glazed challah bread instead of a ribbon.
“By producing locally, we’re helping our customers respond faster to market demands, reduce supply chain risk, and unlock premiumization opportunities,” Andrew Brimacombe, president of Puratos US said.
Domestic production and innovation
The new Pennsauken facility strengthens Puratos’ position as the only glaze supplier offering a reliable, resilient domestic supply of bakery glaze. The facility is designed for maximum efficiency, featuring advanced automation and digital workflows that improve consistency and speed. It also includes a dedicated pilot line for co-creation with customers, accelerating product development.
The project is considered a win for Camden County, creating new jobs and introducing high-tech food manufacturing to the region. The construction involved over 86,000 person-hours and utilized 12 New Jersey vendors.
Sunset Glaze: A sustainable catalyst for growth
The plant’s star product is Sunset Glaze, a plant-based, allergen-free alternative to egg wash. Using UHT technology, the glaze is shelf-stable, offering industrial bakers a safer, more convenient solution with extended usability and reduced waste.
- Sustainability Impact: By eliminating the need for eggs, Sunset Glaze helps manufacturers transition to cage-free operations and cuts CO₂ emissions by over 50% compared to traditional egg-based glazes.
- Market Performance: The glaze is a “catalyst for growth,” with surveys showing that 78% of consumers find glazed items look fresher, and glazed products are outperforming non-glazed products in retail categories.
The opening event included guided tours of the new facility, live demonstrations of advanced bakery automation, and a tour of the Puratos Industrial Pilot Bakery Powered by AMF, which opened earlier this year.
