ShopRite and its parent cooperative, Wakefern Food Corp., are committing $1.25 million in food and funds to regional food banks to assist families facing increased food insecurity due to the ongoing federal government shutdown and the uncertainty surrounding SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.
The significant donation will be distributed among food banks in communities served by Wakefern’s various supermarket banners, which operate across nine states and include ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage, Fairway Market, Di Bruno Bros., Morton Williams and Dearborn Market.
The pledge builds upon the New Jersey-based company’s long-standing dedication to addressing hunger. Through its ShopRite Partners In Caring program, the cooperative has contributed over $65 million to more than 2,500 charities and hunger-fighting organizations since 1999.
Mike Stigers, president of Wakefern Food Corp., emphasized the personal nature of the commitment. “We know many families are facing increased food insecurity and uncertainty right now, and that is why we are making this donation to food banks,” Stigers said. “More than just corporate giving, our long-term commitment to fighting hunger through our ShopRite Partners In Caring program is a testament to the power of community.”
Sean McMenamin, Wakefern chairman and president of McMenamin Family ShopRite, highlighted the close ties between the cooperative’s family-owned businesses and the communities they serve.
“We know the people who come into our stores – they are friends and neighbors… and now, in this challenging moment, we want to help make things a little better for those who are struggling,” McMenamin stated.
The donation is intended to provide immediate relief and stability to families navigating financial hardships and benefit disruptions caused by the government’s operational status.
