The Arc of Essex County names veteran leader Kathleen Hinnigan-Cohen as new CEO

The Arc of Essex County, one of New Jersey’s largest chapters of the national network dedicated to supporting individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), has appointed Kathleen Hinnigan-Cohen, as its new chief executive officer.

Hinnigan-Cohen, who brings 31 years of dedicated service to the organization, steps into the top role after serving as chief operating officer since 2010. She succeeds longtime CEO Linda Lucas, who recently retired following a remarkable 47-year tenure with The Arc.

Hinnigan-Cohen will now lead the organization in its mission to empower over 1,500 individuals with IDD and their families across Essex County, overseeing more than 40 unique programs and services for both adults and children. Established in 1948, The Arc of Essex County is one of the nation’s first-established chapters.

“Linda Lucas’ leadership has been nothing short of transformative for The Arc of Essex County, and I’m honored to follow in her footsteps as its new CEO,” Hinnigan-Cohen said. “I’m looking forward to bringing new ideas and a comprehensive vision that carries the legacy of this organization forward and helps extend our reach. I’m committed to serving with passion and will work tirelessly with our staff as we support individuals with IDD and give them opportunities and resources they need to reach their fullest potential.”

Hinnigan-Cohen’s extensive experience at The Arc of Essex County includes prior roles such as Director of Respite, Community Services and Support Programs. She first joined the organization as an agency social worker in 1994 and has since been a driving force in developing policies, initiatives, and programs. She holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) from New York University and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in New Jersey.

Stephen Falanga, board president of The Arc of Essex County, expressed the Board’s confidence in the new leader while thanking her predecessor. “We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a leadership team defined by compassion and excellence, and we are confident that Kathy will carry that legacy forward with the same dedication,” said Falanga. “We extend our deepest gratitude to Linda for her remarkable 47 years of service and wish her all the best.”
