Get ready to look up: The spectacular Thunder Over the Waves Airshow will make its highly anticipated return to The Wildwoods in 2026, promising to be “bigger and better than ever.” The Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority (GWTIDA) announced the main event will take place on Sept. 12, 2026, following a practice day on Sept. 11.
The announcement comes on the heels of the inaugural airshow’s resounding success earlier this month, which proved to be a powerful draw for the South Jersey shore resort’s post-Labor Day season.
“We’re thrilled to bring the Airshow back next year. The 2026 Airshow promises to be bigger and better than ever, featuring an expanded lineup of impressive performers,” Louis Belasco, GWTIDA executive director said. Belasco noted that the inaugural event rivaled the attendance and excitement of the Wildwoods’ largest midsummer weekends.
Massive economic impact
The debut Airshow, held on Sept. 5 and 6, 2025, accomplished its goal of extending the resort’s visitation season. The event attracted over 133,000 visitors to the Wildwoods and generated an estimated $33.2 million in economic impact.
The airshow is now a major fixture in the Wildwoods’ “Second Season” schedule, which features a vibrant lineup of autumn events, festivals, lower hotel rates, and mild temperatures, enticing visitors to stay well beyond the traditional summer months.
The inaugural Thunder Over the Waves Airshow treated crowds to 15 headline aerial acts, including aerobatic performances by custom-built planes, military aircraft, and highly skilled parachuters.
The 2026 event, funded by the GWTIDA and other sources, is set to solidify the airshow’s place as a premier coastal attraction, driving tourism and economic activity deep into the fall season.
