Carteret awards contract for phase II of Northern Riverwalk construction

The Borough of Carteret has awarded a contract to Piscataway-based Epic Management for Phase II of the Northern Riverwalk. This phase will extend the existing boardwalk by one mile, connecting the Carteret Fishing Pier and Waterfront Park to Noes Creek.

The project will feature a 20-foot-wide timber frame boardwalk, along with the installation of electrical service, lighting, benches, and recycling containers to enhance safety and accessibility for the public. The new walkway is part of a larger waterfront development effort along the Arthur Kill.

According to Cateret Mayor Daniel Reiman, the expansion will increase public access to the Arthur Kill and provide a new recreational resource for all ages. With the completion of Phase II, the borough will have a total of two and a half miles of boardwalk. The project also includes connecting the boardwalk to the docks, gangway, and stairs recently completed by George Harms Construction Co. for the borough’s forthcoming ferry service.

The Northern Riverwalk project is supported by several grants from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, including a $1.2 million Green Acres grant, two supplemental grants of $1.4 million, and a $500,000 Urban Parks initiative grant.

Looking ahead, Reiman announced plans to acquire an abandoned Conrail line to create a five-mile “Rails to Trails to boardwalk” loop, for which the borough was awarded a $1.5 million grant from the state Department of Transportation. The Northern Riverwalk itself will also connect to the future Carteret Intermodal Transportation Center and Carteret Stages, a movie studio and hotel in development, further integrating the waterfront with the borough’s ongoing redevelopment efforts.
