Citizens Bank invites New Jersey entrepreneurs to enter ninth annual $200K small business contest

Citizens Bank officially launched its ninth annual Small Business Community Champion Award Contest, offering a significant funding boost to the “neighborhood anchors” that drive New Jersey’s local economies.

The program will award $10,000 grants to 20 small businesses across the bank’s footprint, which has expanded significantly in the Garden State following its acquisition of Investors Bank. In addition to the capital, winners will receive a year of professional development and networking through Luminary® (a $2,500 value) to help them scale their operations.

Since entering the New Jersey market, Citizens has become a visible partner for the state’s entrepreneurial community. The bank currently operates 107 branches across New Jersey and maintains high-profile partnerships as the “Official Bank” of the New Jersey Devils, the Prudential Center and the New York Giants.

Last year, the program recognized three New Jersey pillars:

  • Anthony’s Cheesecake (Bloomfield): Used the grant to expand a holiday meal program for homebound seniors.

  • Good Morning Dental (Hackensack): Funded pro bono dental services for uninsured local seniors.

  • The Blessed Day Care Center (Maplewood): Invested in transportation resources and food assistance for low-income families.

To be eligible, New Jersey businesses must be for-profit, have been in operation for at least two years, and generate up to $5 million in annual revenue. Applicants must also be Citizens Business Banking customers in good standing by the contest deadline.

The application process is unique in that it prioritizes social impact over traditional financial metrics. Business owners must submit two short essays (totaling 250 words) explaining:

  1. How the $10,000 will strengthen and sustain their business.

  2. How the award will be used to support community growth and evolving local needs.

“Small businesses are the heartbeat of our local communities,” Mark Valentino, head of business banking at Citizens said. “Our goal is to provide not only financial support but also the guidance and connections that help them continue making a difference in the communities they call home.”

Key deadlines for N.J. applicants

Since its inception, the program has awarded nearly $2 million to 192 small businesses, cementing its status as one of the most accessible private grant opportunities for New Jersey’s diverse small business landscape.
