City of Trenton to restart senior center’s renovation

The City of Trenton is announcing the launch of a $1.35 million rehabilitation project at the Reading Senior Center in Trenton, restarting a project that stalled in 2022.

The investment is through Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds with supplemental support from Mercer County American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds.

The community, at 15 Ringold Street, will benefit Trenton’s senior and low- to moderate-income residents.

The center’s renovation began several years ago and is more than 90% complete. However, it was halted after the building was broken into and vandalized in February 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In June, the state invested $7 million to fund two projects on the South Broad Street corridor in Trenton to support rehabilitation and revitalization efforts, promoting increased foot traffic along a key commercial corridor.

Half of the award – $3.5 million – will be used to rehabilitate the building, preserving a critical part of the city’s history while establishing an economic engine along South Broad Street. The other half of the award, in partnership with the Mercer County Improvement Authority, will be used to renovate the Eagle Tavern.
