Father-son vascular team leads Saint Peter’s expansion into Somerset

Saint Peter’s Healthcare System has announced the strategic relocation and expansion of its vascular and general surgery practice to a new, state-of-the-art facility at 75 Veronica Ave., in Somerset.

The move brings a unique dynamic to Central Jersey’s medical landscape: a father-son vascular surgery team, Dr. Niranjan Rao and Dr. Nakul Rao, who are combining 40 years of pioneering experience with the latest cutting-edge minimally invasive techniques.

Niranjan Rao, who also serves as vice president and chief medical officer at Saint Peter’s, is a recognized pioneer in New Jersey’s vascular community. Over four decades, he has been at the forefront of introducing life-saving procedures such as endovascular aneurysm repair and endovenous ablation to the region.

His work primarily focuses on non-invasive management of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), a critical service for preventing limb loss and improving long-term quality of life for diabetic and elderly populations.

The addition of Nakul (Nick) Rao to the practice brings a suite of advanced, high-tech procedures that are becoming the new standard of care for complex arterial conditions:

  • TCAR (TransCarotid Artery Revascularization): A breakthrough for stroke prevention. Unlike traditional methods, TCAR uses a small incision at the neckline and a blood-flow reversal system to protect the brain while stenting a narrowed carotid artery.

  • FEVAR (Fenestrated EVAR): A highly specialized, minimally invasive repair for complex aortic aneurysms. By using custom-made stents with “branches,” Dr. Nakul Rao can redirect blood flow to vital organs without the need for high-risk open surgery.
  • PERT (Pulmonary Embolism Response Team): A new multidisciplinary initiative at Saint Peter’s designed to provide rapid, expert intervention for life-threatening blood clots in the lungs.

“Nick brings expanded expertise to the practice with the latest techniques,” the senior Dr. Rao said. “I am extremely honored to have my son working alongside me to provide these advanced visceral and aortic interventions.”

The Somerset office at 75 Veronica Avenue (Suite 207) is part of a broader network of Saint Peter’s vascular care. Joining the Drs. Rao is Dr. Andrew Camerota, a general and thyroid surgeon.

The transition toward “endovascular” or minimally invasive surgery means smaller incisions, lower risk of infection, and significantly faster recovery times. For many patients who were previously considered “too sick” for traditional open surgery, these new technologies—available now in Somerset—offer a viable path to recovery.
