A beloved West Orange landmark, the former Eagle Rock Lanes bowling alley, has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a state-of-the-art Iron Culture gym. The nearly 26,000-square-foot facility, a $10 million investment, is set for a soft opening this month, bringing a new era of fitness to the community while paying homage to its past.
The new West Orange location, situated alongside the picturesque Crystal Lake, is the latest expansion for the rapidly growing Iron Culture brand, which already boasts successful gyms in North Bergen and Cedar Knolls. This isn’t just another gym; it’s envisioned as a comprehensive hub for wellness, community, and the fitness lifestyle, poised to attract enthusiasts from across the state and beyond.
Fitness aficionados can anticipate an unparalleled experience within the gym’s 13,000 square feet of main-floor workout space. It will feature an array of cutting-edge lifting equipment, expert trainers, diverse group classes, and personalized fitness assessments. The space is designed to be welcoming to everyone, from casual gym-goers to serious athletes.
The interior design is a true standout, thoughtfully reimagined from the original bowling alley structure. It boasts re-leveled flooring, impressive nearly 16-foot ceilings (reaching 34 feet at the apex), a dedicated cardio deck, and an abundance of mounted mirrors. The facility is equipped with a full suite of custom-made, imported dumbbells and specialized machinery from high-end brands like Panatta, Prime, Atlantis, Newtech and Arsenal Strength.
One of its most unique features is what’s being touted as the “world’s foremost posing room.” This dedicated space offers 360-degree mirrors, customizable lighting, and a perfect backdrop for social media content or competitive imagery.
The gym’s striking interior design was conceived by the renowned U.K. architectural firm zynk Design. Their vision draws inspiration from modern fitness spaces globally, emphasizing natural flow, clear sightlines, rugged industrial metallic themes, and ambient, “sculptural” lighting designed to highlight members’ progress.
Founded in 2019 by New Jersey entrepreneur Arthur Imperatore — a former NY Waterway executive — the broader Iron Culture brand distinguishes itself by blending hardcore fitness with a strong emphasis on mental well-being. This approach aims to create a gym experience that is as transformative for the mind as it is for the body, fostering a holistic approach to health and fitness in West Orange.
