Georgian Court University and MCI ink landmark deal to fast-track health care careers in Ocean County

In a strategic move to combat looming health care worker shortages, Georgian Court University (GCU) and the Medical Career Institute (MCI) have signed a dual-track articulation agreement. The partnership creates a “two-way street” for students, allowing them to seamlessly blend rigorous academic theory with specialized clinical training.

The timing of the deal is critical: while the health care industry faces significant staffing deficits, student interest is rebounding. National undergraduate enrollment in health professions rose 8% in late 2024, the first increase since the pandemic. This new alliance aims to capture that momentum by removing the bureaucratic hurdles that often stall student progress.

The agreement establishes two distinct educational pipelines designed to save students both time and money:

  1. The Sonography Track: Georgian Court biology majors can now transition to MCI to specialize in Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Cardiovascular Sonography. This path allows them to earn a GCU Bachelor’s degree with a specialized Medical Imaging track and the clinical hours required for certification.
  2. The Degree Completion Track: Graduates of MCI’s allied health programs—including Surgical Technology—can transfer up to 90 credits toward a Bachelor of Arts in Health Profession Studies at GCU. This massive credit transfer helps students avoid duplicating coursework and accelerates their path to a four-year degree.

“These agreements build bridges for our students,” Eugene Cornacchia, interimpresident of Georgian Court University said. “Together with MCI, we are creating clear, supportive pathways that open new opportunities and remove barriers.”

Bogdan (Dan) Jasinski, CEO and School Director of MCI, emphasized that the collaboration is about more than just credits. “MCI Institute is proud to collaborate with GCU to support academic, professional, and workforce readiness,” he said, noting the focus on enhancing post-graduate job marketability.

The initiative was led by Carolyn Bergman, chair of GCU’s Department of Biology. According to Bergman, the collaboration was designed to give biology majors immediate clinical options while welcoming technical graduates into a broader academic environment that expands their long-term career ceiling.

The agreements officially took effect in January 2026. Coordinated advising and admissions processes are already active to assist students currently enrolled at either institution.
