Groundbreaking inpatient program reverses functional decline in Parkinson’s patients

Clinicians at Hackensack Meridian JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute in Edison have published a first-of-its-kind U.S. study revealing that a brief, intensive inpatient stay can significantly “reset” the clock for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease.

The study, published this week in Frontiers in Rehabilitation Sciences, found that a two-week interdisciplinary program led to statistically significant improvements in mobility, self-care, and speech—even for patients who were previously struggling while living at home.

Traditionally, inpatient rehabilitation is reserved for patients following a catastrophic event, such as a fall or surgery. However, the Parkinson’s Wellness Program at JFK Johnson flips this model, offering a proactive, elective two-week “boot camp” to address functional declines before they lead to emergencies.

“This research validates a proactive approach,” the study authors noted. “Rather than waiting for a hospitalization, this program allows individuals to enhance their abilities and potentially reduce future health care costs.”

The research, led by Dr. Steven Markos, Dr. Sara Cuccurullo, Dr. Hayk Petrosyan, and Janice Dibling, utilized standardized tools like the AM-PAC and Section GG assessments to track progress. The results highlighted three major areas of success:

  • Mobility & daily activities: Patients showed marked gains in their ability to perform basic movements and daily self-care tasks.

  • Vocal function: In a breakthrough for quality of life, the program led to significant improvements in speech. Parkinson’s often causes a “quieting” of the voice that leads to social withdrawal; this program helps patients regain their “loudness” and confidence.

  • Safety: The study confirmed that an intensive, acute model is safe for this population when conducted under the daily supervision of a physiatrist (physical medicine and rehabilitation physician).

The program’s success is rooted in its multidisciplinary nature. Under the guidance of specialized physicians, patients undergo a rigorous schedule of:

  1. Physical therapy: Utilizing the LSVT BIG® methodology to improve limb movement and balance.

  2. Occupational therapy: Focusing on fine motor skills and independence in the home.

  3. Speech therapy: Implementing SPEAK OUT!® protocols to strengthen vocal muscles.

As Parkinson’s remains the world’s fastest-growing neurological disorder, the JFK Johnson program stands as the only inpatient model of its kind in the nation led by physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians.

For the millions of Americans living with the disease, the study offers a new blueprint for maintaining independence and delaying the onset of debilitating symptoms.
