Hudson County Community College (HCCC) has announced the promotion of Matthew LaBrake to associate vice president for Digital Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Emerging Technologies.
The move, announced Monday by HCCC President Christopher Reber, underscores the college’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into its academic and operational framework. LaBrake, who joined HCCC in 2021 as the chief Online Learning Officer, has been a driving force behind the college’s digital transformation.
Since his arrival, LaBrake has spearheaded the development of a comprehensive digital learning ecosystem focused on accessibility and equity. His leadership has seen a significant expansion in high-quality online and hybrid learning options, backed by institutional course design standards and robust support systems for both faculty and students.
His efforts were recognized globally when the HCCC Center for Online Learning received the 2025 EDGE Digital Accessibility Award for Advancing Inclusive Online Education.
In his new role, LaBrake will take the helm of the college’s strategic approach to Artificial Intelligence. He currently co-chairs the Artificial Intelligence Strategy and Governance Council (AISGC), a cross-functional body responsible for guiding the responsible use and integration of AI across the campus.
“Matt will continue to lead growing college-wide professional development opportunities related to planning and utilizing Artificial Intelligence,” Reber said. “His goal is to achieve positive outcomes in teaching and institutional operations while mitigating the ethical and equity challenges inherent in the technology.”
Key focus areas for the new role:
- AI Literacy: Chairing the Online Learning Advisory Council to educate students and staff on AI tools.
- Workforce Alignment: Collaborating with faculty to ensure curricula meet the technological demands of the modern job market.
- Ethical Governance: Developing policies to ensure the responsible use of emerging technologies.
LaBrake is a highly credentialed leader in the field, holding certifications from the League for Innovation in Community Colleges and the Online Learning Consortium. He is also a recipient of the 2024 Rising Star-Manager Regional Award from the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).
Beyond Jersey City, LaBrake is an active contributor to the national higher education landscape, serving in advisory roles for the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) and presenting frequently on digital strategy and AI.
