Kumon North America, the world’s largest after-school math and reading enrichment program, has named Yusuke Nakamura as its new chief executive officer and chief operations officer for the North American region.
Nakamura, who brings nearly 30 years of leadership experience to the role, will be based at the company’s headquarters in Rutherford. He succeeds Minoru Tanabe, who is transitioning to the role of senior executive officer and president of Kumon Europe and Africa.
Nakamura’s new role gives him oversight of operations for more than 2,634 franchises in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as well as nearly 440 employees. He plans to focus on leveraging innovation to meet the evolving needs of students while remaining committed to Kumon’s core mission of fostering self-learning and discipline.
“I am honored to lead Kumon North America, alongside our talented and passionate Instructors and Associates, at a time when education is being reimagined,” Nakamura said. “As we embrace innovation, we remain firmly grounded in Kumon’s 65+ year legacy of nurturing self-learning, discipline, and mastery.”
Nakamura’s career with Kumon began in 1997 as a field consultant in Kobe, Japan. His extensive international experience includes serving as president of Kumon Philippines before he relocated to North America in 2021. He moved to New Jersey in 2023 to serve as chief strategy officer at the Field Support Center, positioning him to lead the company’s future growth from its Rutherford base.
