Jonathan Kyriacou, a top-ranking official at one of the nation’s top hospitals, has been named the new CEO of Jersey City Medical Center, its parent company, RWJBarnbas Health, announced today.
Kyriacou, who will begin the role on Jan. 26, will oversee Jersey City Medical Center’s strategic direction, operational leadership and financial performance. His core functions will include oversight of all day-to-day operations, delivery of exceptional patient care and leadership of key strategic initiatives in support of RWJBarnabas Health’s mission and continued growth across Hudson County and beyond.
Jersey City Medical Center is a comprehensive full-service acute-care 352-bed teaching hospital – a not-for-profit hospital, the Medical Center is a state-designated Level II Regional Trauma Center with over 17,000 admissions and 100,000 Emergency Department visits annually.
Kyriacou comes to JCMC from The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, a 1,134-bed flagship academic medical center that annually is ranked among the top in the country. There, he managed several complex operational and fiscal initiatives including a $4 billion operating budget and led a team of over 15,000 employees.
Kyriacou worked at Mount Sinai for 15 years. His most notable achievement was his leadership and oversight of a $750 million master capital plan, which included the design of the new Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Hospital, and the implementation of a five-year strategic plan to expand clinical services and improve operational performance metrics.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kyriacou spearheaded the rapid expansion of temporary capacity to 1,600 beds and established large-scale testing and vaccination centers, demonstrating exceptional skill in crisis management. He also supported the establishment of the Institute for Critical Care Medicine across the Mount Sinai Health System to improve quality outcomes and expand coverage.
He has been recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as an “Academic Medical Center COO to Know” and a “Healthcare Leader Under 40.”
All of this makes Kyriacou a perfect fit, according to Thomas Biga, an executive VP and president of the Northwest Region for RWJBarnabas Health
“Jonathan’s track record in operational excellence, strategic planning, and high-quality patient care aligns perfectly with the mission, vision, values, and goals of RWJBarnabas Health and Jersey City Medical Center,” he said. “His leadership will be instrumental in our efforts to grow and enhance our services in Hudson County.”
Kyriacou earned a graduate degree in Health Policy and Management from New York Medical College, an undergraduate degree from Stony Brook University and certificates from the Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Michigan. He served as a faculty member at the City University of New York, where he taught courses ranging from health care management to trends in the U.S health care system and authored several publications about clinical financial incentive models and health care reform strategies.
Additionally, Kyriacou has been recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as an “Academic Medical Center COO to Know” and a “Healthcare Leader Under 40.” He has been recognized by Crain’s New York Business as a “40 Under 40” honoree.
