Signaling a year of major infrastructure completions and economic expansion, the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners held its 2026 Reorganization Meeting on Jan.7. The ceremony, hosted at the Middlesex College Performing Arts Center, served as both a victory lap for 2025’s achievements and a roadmap for the County’s “Destination 2040” vision.
The event featured a high-profile assembly of state leadership, including outgoing Gov. Phil Murphy and Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill, who is set to take office on Jan. 20.
During the meeting, the Board moved to maintain its current leadership, re-electing Ronald Rios as Director and Shanti Narra as Deputy Director.
“Our Board has a clear vision, anchored by a strong financial foundation,” Rios said. “We are — and will continue to be — an economic powerhouse in New Jersey and a sought-after destination in the Northeast.”
The meeting also saw several key officials sworn into new terms:
- County Commissioners: Claribel A. Azcona-Barber, Charles Kenny, and Chanelle Scott McCullum.
- Constitutional Officers: County Clerk Nancy J. Pinkin and Sheriff Mildred S. Scott.
A central theme of the reorganization was the Community, Innovation, and Opportunity (CIO) Strategic Investment Plan. Several landmark projects at the Middlesex College campus are slated to open their doors in late 2026:
- Middlesex County Innovation Magnet School: A future-ready educational hub.
- Multipurpose Community Venue: A 3,500-seat stadium that will serve as the home for Rutgers Baseball starting this spring.
- Middlesex College Student Center: A new heart for campus life.
- Destination Athletic Complex: Featuring 14 synthetic fields and a state-of-the-art cricket field at Thomas A. Edison Park.
Beyond the college campus, the Board highlighted the County’s growing dominance in life sciences and transit. The Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center, which opened in May 2025, continues to anchor the regional health care sector, while the New Jersey Health Life Science Exchange (HELIX) in New Brunswick is on track for a summer 2026 opening.
Additionally, the modernization of the New Brunswick Train Station, which began in late 2025, remains a priority to improve regional connectivity.
Middlesex County enters 2026 with a AAA bond rating, a status it has maintained for over two decades. This fiscal health is being leveraged for “future-ready” solutions, including:
- AI Education: New artificial intelligence pathways within the County’s vocational and magnet schools.
- Green Energy: Development of a clean-energy microgrid designed to power the entire Middlesex College campus.
Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill commended the Board’s efforts, stating, “Across our state, we are facing serious challenges—and I commend these public servants for stepping up to serve their communities… I look forward to having a productive relationship with our local leaders as we deliver for residents.”
