Gov. Phil Murphy announced a new milestone for clean transportation in New Jersey on Tuesday, revealing that the state has officially surpassed 250,000 electric vehicle (EV) registrations. The announcement, made during New Jersey’s Climate Week, highlights the accelerating adoption of EVs and the growing confidence of consumers in their reliability.
According to data from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, more than 254,444 EVs are now registered in the state, marking a significant 15% increase since December 2024. This growth demonstrates the success of the Murphy Administration’s policies designed to incentivize green transportation and decarbonize New Jersey’s heaviest-emitting sector.
“Over the course of my Administration, our policies have taken driving electric from a futuristic concept to a practical choice for drivers – reflected by the exponential growth in registrations,” Murphy said.
The state’s efforts to promote EV adoption have included robust incentives for consumers and a significant expansion of the charging network. There are now over 1,700 fast charging ports and 3,300 Level 2 charging ports publicly available across New Jersey, with hundreds more being added annually.
Murphy emphasized that the continued expansion of charging infrastructure and incentives for EV purchases will be crucial in reducing transportation emissions and building a cleaner, more sustainable future for New Jersey. He also noted that this transition is fostering a healthy market, increasing consumer choice, and creating new, good-paying jobs.
