NJ TRANSIT boosts modernization plan with order for 200 new rail cars

NJ TRANSIT is continuing its major initiative to modernize its rail fleet and improve service reliability by exercising a contract option with Alstom for 200 additional multilevel rail cars. The purchase, authorized by the NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors in May 2025, brings the total number of new rail cars ordered since 2018 to 374. These new cars will replace aging, less reliable single-level cars, aiming for a fully modernized fleet by 2031.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy emphasized that this investment is about more than just equipment.

“By replacing outdated rail cars with state-of-the-art equipment, we’re not only improving the commuting experience for millions of riders, but also strengthening our economy, reducing emissions, and moving toward a more sustainable future,” Murphy said.

The new Multilevel III rail cars will replace NJ TRANSIT’s older Comet II, IV, and V single-level cars. They offer significant upgrades, including enhanced mechanical reliability, increased seating capacity, and improved accessibility. Onboard amenities will include USB charging ports, and the cars are capable of reaching speeds of up to 110 m.p.h. The contract for the 200 cars is valued at approximately $1.055 billion.

In a separate move, the Board also authorized the purchase of 12 additional dual-powered locomotives from Alstom. These ALP-45A locomotives can operate on both electrified and non-electrified lines, replacing older, less efficient diesel models. The new locomotives are expected to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by an estimated 52 tons annually, supporting NJ TRANSIT’s goal of a reduced carbon footprint.
