NJ TRANSIT enhances commuter experience with new retail openings at key hubs

NJ TRANSIT announced the opening of several new food and beverage outlets at Secaucus Junction, Newark Penn Station and Maplewood Station. The new offerings are part of a broader strategic initiative to improve the daily commute while maximizing the value of the agency’s extensive real estate portfolio.

The new tenants range from quick-service national favorites to local artisanal offerings, providing commuters with high-quality refreshments and dining options directly along their travel routes.

The expansion introduces diverse culinary options tailored to the unique traffic flow of each station:

  • Secaucus Junction: Customers can now enjoy classic snacks from Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, Cinnabon and Carvel Ice Cream.
  • Newark Penn Station: Zaro’s Bakery has unveiled a major overhaul featuring its Freshens concept, which adds smoothies, grilled flatbreads, and rice bowls to its traditional bakery lineup. Additionally, Home Slice Pizza has opened in the main concourse, serving fresh slices to the thousands of travelers passing through the hub daily.
  • Maplewood Station: Embracing local roots, the station now hosts The Station, an outpost of the Maplewood General Store. It features fresh-brewed coffee from the Montclair-based roastery Paper Plane Coffee, alongside assorted snacks and baked goods.

“These exciting tenants at our key stations are another way NJ TRANSIT is working to enhance the commuting experience for customers,” Gagandeep Singh, NJ TRANSIT senior vice president of Real Estate said. “This is another example of NJ TRANSIT’s efforts to meet the travel needs of every customer, while also utilizing its assets to support non-farebox revenue.”

These retail openings are a tangible result of The LAND Plan (Leveraging Assets for Non-farebox Dollars). This long-term roadmap seeks to generate as much as $1.9 billion in non-farebox revenue for NJ TRANSIT over the next 30 years by activating underutilized assets within its 8,000-acre real estate portfolio.
