NJCC provides $2.3M to expand Newark Community Health Centers

New Jersey Community Capital (NJCC), the state’s leading nonprofit community development financial institution, on Thursday announced a $2.3 million construction loan to Newark Community Health Centers (NCHC). The financing will pave the way for a 4,500-square-foot expansion of medical facilities in Newark, significantly bolstering health care access in one of the region’s most densely populated areas.

The investment is designed to support NCHC’s mission of providing high-quality, affordable care to uninsured and medically underserved populations. With these improvements, the provider expects to scale its capacity to serve 55,000 patients annually.

Founded in 1986, NCHC is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that operates seven medical centers across Newark, East Orange, Irvington, and Orange. Their services cover the full spectrum of health care, including primary medical and dental services for children, adults, and seniors.

For NJCC, the loan represents more than just a real estate transaction; it is a strategic investment in the economic and physical stability of the city.

“Access to health care is a key attribute of thriving communities,” Bernel Hall, president and CEO of NJCC said. “Physical and mental health are foundational to economic growth and stability for individuals and families. This investment strengthens access to essential healthcare services and supports NCHC, a longstanding community provider.”

The $2.3 million loan will specifically fund tenant improvements at a new Newark location. By expanding NCHC’s footprint, the project addresses persistent health disparities in overlooked populations while simultaneously driving local economic development.
