NJEDA approves $20M for FIFA World Cup 2026™; $5M earmarked for statewide ‘Fan Zones’ and small business boost

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) Board has officially greenlit a $20 million funding allocation to support the planning and execution of the FIFA World Cup 2026™. The funds, directed to the New York New Jersey Host Committee, are designed to maximize the tournament’s economic reach, ensuring the benefits extend far beyond the pitch at MetLife Stadium.

A key component of the approval is a $5 million carve-out dedicated to Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s initiative to bring the World Cup experience directly into local New Jersey neighborhoods through fan zones, watch parties, and street festivals.

With New Jersey set to host the historic World Cup Final, state leadership is focused on making the tournament accessible to residents who may not have tickets to the matches.

“As we prepare to host visitors from around the world this summer, we are committed to ensuring New Jersey residents and small businesses from across the state can join in on the festivities,” Sherrill said. “Whether you are in North, Central, or South Jersey, we are bringing the 2026 FIFA World Cup to you.”

The NJEDA will oversee the disbursement of the funds, with the Host Committee set to contract a New Jersey-based nonprofit to manage the statewide events. This strategy aims to:

  • Support Local Producers: Partner with homegrown event planners to create authentic Jersey-style viewing areas.
  • Engage Small Businesses: Sub-granting opportunities will be available for local community organizations and small vendors.
  • Statewide Promotion: Collaboration with chambers of commerce, special improvement districts (SIDs), and tourism bureaus to market New Jersey as a premier global destination.

“All eyes will be on New Jersey during the 2026 World Cup,” NJEDA CEO Evan Weiss, said. “The NJEDA will work alongside the Host Committee and our partners across New Jersey to make sure the World Cup has a lasting transformation on the entire state.”

Allocation Purpose
$15 Million General Host Committee operations, tournament planning, and implementation.
$5 Million Statewide “Fan Experiences,” including watch parties, festivals, and street fairs.
Total Impact Tourism promotion and direct economic development for NJ small businesses.

Alex Lasry, CEO of the NYNJ Host Committee, emphasized that these “fan experience” initiatives are the heart of the committee’s mission to provide affordable and accessible ways for the community to participate in what is being described as a “once-in-a-generation” event.

As the tournament approaches, the NJEDA and the Host Committee will continue to roll out details on how local businesses and municipalities can apply for participation in the upcoming festivals and street fairs.
