NJIT develops AI platform to track World Cup fan sentiment

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has unveiled a new, innovative platform designed to track and analyze real-time fan sentiment for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. Developed by students and faculty from NJIT’s Martin Tuchman School of Management (MTSM), the platform will provide data-driven insights to the NYNJ Host Committee and other regional stakeholders.

The dashboard aggregates data from social media and other online sources to provide a comprehensive view of what fans are discussing, highlighting trending hashtags, popular topics, and geographic patterns. By leveraging advanced analytics and artificial intelligence, the platform can identify viral moments—from game-winning goals to controversial referee calls—and gauge the public’s sentiment surrounding them.

“NJIT is proud to contribute to the work underway by the FIFA NYNJ Host Committee with this innovative initiative,” NJIT President Teik Lim said. He noted that the project offers “invaluable real-world learning opportunities” for students and showcases the university’s strengths in AI and data analytics on a global stage.

The insights from the platform were designed to help the Host Committee and other regional stakeholders tailor its communication strategies, local programming, and engagement opportunities to better connect with fans. This effort is particularly important as the New York/New Jersey region prepares to host eight matches, including the World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium. The tournament is expected to draw over 1.2 million visitors to the region.

Alex Lasry, CEO of the NYNJ Host Committee, praised the project as a “powerful example of how the tournament can inspire participation beyond the stadiums,” fostering creativity and strengthening community pride. He added that the goal is to create a lasting legacy that connects the region and its people.
