The Perth Amboy Redevelopment Agency (PARA) is on a mission to revitalize a prominent nine-acre plot that serves as a gateway to the city, launching a “Request for Proposals” (RFP) to find the most creative and innovative ideas for the site.
The deadline for submissions is Oct. 15.
For years, the area has been a blighted brownfield, but a larger $110 million redevelopment plan aims to transform it into a vibrant community hub. Mayor Helmin Caba says the city is looking for mixed-use development, including entertainment or hospitality, that will meet current needs and inspire future growth.
A canvas for the future
Tashilee Vazquez, PARA’s executive director, said the goal is to create an attractive entrance that complements the Smith Street commercial corridor and capitalizes on the planned billion-dollar Riverton project across the river in Sayreville.
“We are looking for the respondents to be creative and innovative with their concepts,” Vazquez said, adding that the proposals must also be realistic. The selected developer will receive a “pad ready” site.
The mayor noted that this redevelopment is about creating a legacy for future generations, transforming the area into a destination that will attract visitors and investment. The overall project, which includes a redeveloper-funded passive recreation area and a new warehouse, is expected to generate over 400 long-term jobs and more than $1 million in local tax revenue.
This project is a significant milestone for Perth Amboy, which is already seeing growing interest from investors due to its downtown NJ Transit train station, picturesque marina, and robust public transportation system. The city is poised to become “a beacon of growth and opportunity,” Vazquez said, with this project offering a blank canvas to paint a more prosperous future.
