PSEG applauds Sherrill’s nuclear push, says New Jersey can be innovation hub

Following an event at its Salem nuclear station, company says move improves energy security — and signals state is open for business

Recognizing that the state has a unique opportunity to become a hub for nuclear innovation, PSEG applauded Gov. Mikie Sherrill for taking steps in that direction during an event held Wednesday morning at PSEG’s Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Station.

PSEG, in a release, applauded Sherrill’s decisive action to accelerate new nuclear development in the state, saying today’s announcement is latest example of how the governor is taking action to show that New Jersey is open for business.

“By removing outdated barriers and creating a clear path for modern nuclear technologies, the governor is ensuring that New Jersey can meet growing energy needs with reliable, 24/7, carbon-free power that supports economic growth for decades to come,” the company said.

“PSEG shares the governor’s recognition of the benefits and opportunities that new nuclear generation can bring to New Jersey.”

Addressing energy costs — and generation — have been a hallmark of her vision for the state since she was candidate Sherrill. And one PSEG and the state supports.

PSEG said the governor’s vision creates space for innovation and opens the door to new investment that will benefit communities across the state.

“New Jersey currently imports nearly half of its electricity, leaving our residents and businesses increasingly exposed to regional supply constraints, volatile costs and the impacts of a rapidly changing grid,” the company said. “With energy demand rising and supply tightening, expanding instate nuclear generation is essential to maintaining reliability, predictability and our long-term energy independence.”

PSEG noted that the state already benefits from a highly skilled nuclear workforce of more than 1,600 professionals, with several thousand additional jobs supported indirectly. Coupled with New Jersey’s strong education system and deep pipeline of technical and skilled-trades talent, these assets position the state to lead the next era of energy, the company said.

PSEG continues to state that it is willing to enable new nuclear at its existing nuclear location by working with partners to leverage its early site permit and the company’s extensive expertise in permitting and nuclear operations, without investing PSEG’s own capital to finance the project.

“This is an exciting time for the future of nuclear power in New Jersey. Working across public and private organizations, together with our labor partners, New Jersey can demonstrate what the future of nuclear energy looks like — and ensure that future is built right here at home,” the company said.
