Rutgers-New Brunswick reaffirms National ‘Community Engagement’ status and secures civic award

Rutgers University-New Brunswick has solidified its reputation as a powerhouse for public service, earning a prestigious national reaffirmation from the Carnegie Foundation and winning the 2026 Insight into Academia Civic Engagement and Community Service Award.

The dual honors recognize the university’s massive efforts to integrate student research and institutional resources with the needs of local New Jersey communities.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has officially reaffirmed Rutgers-New Brunswick’s Community Engagement Classification. This elite designation, which the university has held consistently since 2009, identifies Rutgers as a top-tier institution for “public flagship” service.

Unlike many academic rankings, the Carnegie classification requires a rigorous institutional self-study. A team of 30 administrators, staff, and students spent months documenting how the university translates its teaching and research into tangible benefits for the state.

“This recognition highlights our role as a public flagship where excellence and access thrive,” Rutgers-New Brunswick Chancellor Francine Conway said. “Our teaching, research, and service translate into real impact for people and communities across New Jersey and beyond.”

In addition to the Carnegie status, the university received specific acclaim for its Advancing Community Development program, which won the 2026 Insight into Academia Civic Engagement and Community Service Award.

Managed by the Rutgers Collaborative Center for Community Engagement, the program was cited for its success in building sustained partnerships that address local social and economic challenges.

Tiffiny Butler, vice chancellor for access and community engagement, described these efforts as vital but often “silent labor.”

“To be seen and known is important – not just for the recognition, but to build and sustain momentum in your progress to continue doing good work,” Butler said.

The award-winning application highlighted several flagship programs that define the Rutgers student experience:

  • The Rutgers Bonner Leaders Program: Focused on student-led community service.
  • Rutgers Scarlet Service Internships: Providing students with high-impact public service opportunities.
  • The Conversation Tree: A joint venture with the Graduate School of Education to promote community dialogue.
  • Sustainability Ambassadors: Advancing the university’s Office of Climate Action goals within the local region.
  • IDEA Design Research Internship: Connecting innovation and entrepreneurship with community needs.

The reaffirmation serves as a roadmap for the university’s future. Butler noted that the self-study gives the campus a “clear picture” of its current impact and a starting point for expanding its footprint in the years to come.
