Saint Peter’s University Hospital, a member of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System, has been nationally recognized for its commitment to high-quality stroke care. The hospital has received the American Heart Association’s Get with The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus award, which honors hospitals that demonstrate a proven dedication to ensuring stroke patients have access to the most appropriate, evidence-based treatment.
According to the American Heart Association, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. Early detection and treatment are crucial for improving survival rates, minimizing disability, and accelerating recovery. The Get With The Guidelines program works with hospitals nationwide to align patient care with the latest research-based guidelines, which can significantly reduce the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.
“Saint Peter’s University Hospital is committed to improving patient care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines,” Dr. Roger Behar, a neurologist at the hospital said. “Time is the most critical factor in stroke care. Rapid treatment improves the chances of preserving speech, movement and memory and reduces the chances of long-term disability.”
The hospital also received two additional honors from the American Heart Association. The Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll award recognizes hospitals that have met specific criteria to reduce the time between a patient’s arrival at the hospital and the administration of thrombolytic therapy. Saint Peter’s also received the Target: Type 2 Diabetes™ Honor Roll award, which highlights the hospital’s efforts to ensure that patients with Type 2 diabetes, who are at a higher risk for complications, receive the most current, evidence-based care while hospitalized for a stroke.
Dr. Steven Messe, volunteer chair of the American Heart Association Stroke System of Care Advisory Group, praised Saint Peter’s commitment. “Participation in Get With The Guidelines is associated with improved patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates — a win for health care systems, families and communities.”
