The Salvation Army New Jersey Division is calling on Garden State residents to lace up their sneakers for a cause. Today, the organization announced the launch of its first-ever “Running for the Most Good” Virtual 5K, a statewide event scheduled for May 11–17.
The event coincides with National Salvation Army Week, serving as a digital rallying cry for individuals, families, and corporate teams to support local social services without the constraints of a single starting line.
Unlike traditional races, this virtual format allows participants to complete their 3.1 miles at their own pace and in their own preferred location—whether it’s a local park in Paramus, the boardwalk in Asbury Park, or a treadmill in Cherry Hill.
The initiative is designed to mirror The Salvation Army’s expansive reach, which provides services to every single zip code across New Jersey. Funds raised through the event will remain local, directly fueling programs that provide:
- Food Security: Supporting local food pantries and soup kitchens.
- Shelter & Housing: Assisting those experiencing homelessness or facing eviction.
- Youth Services: Funding after-school programs and summer camps.
- Emergency Aid: Providing immediate relief during personal or community-wide crises.
“This is a meaningful way for people across the state to make a difference,” Major Brett DeMichael, divisional commander, said. “Every step helps The Salvation Army provide essential programs and services to our neighbors who rely on our support.”
How to participate
Registration for the event is $25, and participants can complete their run or walk anytime during the designated week in May.
- Who: Individuals, families, and corporate “teams.”
- Where: Anywhere in New Jersey (or beyond).
- When: May 11–17, 2026.
- Goal: 3.1 miles (5K).
Local Salvation Army Corps and community groups have already begun signing up, and the organization is actively seeking corporate sponsors looking to engage their employees in a statewide wellness and philanthropy effort.
By moving the race to a virtual platform, The Salvation Army hopes to lower the barrier to entry for busy families and professionals while creating a unified “sea of red” across social media as participants share their progress.
For those looking to register, explore sponsorship tiers, or learn more about how the funds impact their specific town, the organization has launched a dedicated portal at www.SalvationArmyNJ.org/5K.
