Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill arrived at the League of Municipalities Wednesday with a simple message: She’s determined to create a state where every child has an opportunity for success.
“It shouldn’t be that hard to do that,” she said.
Speaking to a group of a few hundred at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City — at a party sponsored by MBI — Sherrill said the idea of creating chances for success resonated with the voters.
“This race was, at its heart, about opportunity,” she said. “What so much of us want to do, is work hard, make sure we have a good life for our families and that our kids are on a good path.”
Sherrill said she’s heard that sentiment repeatedly since her overwhelming 13-point victory on Nov. 4.
“As I go around the state now, in the aftermath of the election, that’s what so many people tell me they voted for — that opportunity, that shot.”
Sherrill said she wants to create a state that is affordable to live in.
“To make sure that if you work hard, you work one job, you can get ahead here — and you can have a nice retirement,” she said.
Sherrill paid particular mention to how she’ll work to help children, ensuring they have good schools and that the state addresses the mental health crisis.
The goal is straightforward: “Making sure that everybody here in New Jersey has a great opportunity to succeed here in our state,” she said.
