NJM Insurance Group announced Thursday the election of Joseph Colalillo to its board of directors.
Colalillo, thepresident of ShopRite of Hunterdon County, joins the board at a time of steady regional expansion for NJM. He brings decades of experience in high-stakes retail operations and a deep-rooted commitment to New Jersey’s business community.
As a second-generation leader of his family’s ShopRite branch, Colalillo oversees more than 1,300 associates across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. His tenure has been defined by modernizing the traditional grocery experience, spearheading initiatives in:
- Digital Transformation: Launching large-scale order-fulfillment and online shopping services.
- Sustainability & Health: Integrating in-store wellness services and rigorous food safety programs.
- Philanthropy: Leading the annual ShopRite Run for Hunger and various local community partnerships.
“Joe is a respected business leader whose experience guiding a complex, customer-focused organization will bring valuable insight to NJM’s Board,” Carol Voorhees, NJM President and CEO said. “His dedication to serving communities aligns with NJM’s mission and values.”
NJM, founded in 1913, operates in a mutual fashion, meaning it is run for the exclusive benefit of its policyholders rather than outside shareholders. Colalillo’s background in cooperative leadership—specifically his roles on the boards of Wakefern Food Corporation and the Food Marketing Institute (FMI)—makes him a natural fit for this structure.
“NJM has built a strong reputation for service and integrity,” Colalillo remarked. “I am honored to join its Board and look forward to supporting its efforts to deliver exceptional service to policyholders throughout the region.”
Colalillo’s appointment adds a decorated voice to the NJM leadership team. A graduate of Villanova University, his previous accolades include the New Jersey Food Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his long-term contributions to the state’s economy and food security.
Edward Stern, NJM’s Board Chair, noted that Colalillo’s “extensive business expertise” would be an “outstanding addition” as the insurer continues to maintain its “A” or higher Financial Strength Rating from AM Best—a streak that has lasted over 89 years.
