Target to open new stores in Jersey City and West Orange this month

New Jersey is at the forefront of Target’s national expansion as the retail giant prepares to open two new locations in the Garden State this month. These openings are part of a broader strategy announced by Target Corporation today to launch more than 30 new stores in 2026 and over 300 locations by 2035.

While the company celebrates its milestone 2,000th store opening in North Carolina, New Jersey residents in Hudson and Essex counties are getting their own delivery of “Tar-zhay” style.

The two new New Jersey locations, both scheduled to welcome guests on March 15, showcase Target’s flexible store formats designed to fit specific community needs:

  • Jersey City (Journal Square): Located at 104 Sip Avenue, this 40,000-square-foot “small-format” store is nestled near the Journal Square PATH station. It is designed for urban commuters and local residents, featuring a CVS Pharmacy and a Starbucks Café.

  • West Orange: Situated at 235 Prospect Avenue in the West Orange Plaza, this massive 150,000-square-foot location replaces a former Kmart. It will serve as a full-service hub, offering Drive Up, Order Pickup, and same-day delivery services.

The New Jersey expansion is fueled by Target’s $5 billion capital investment plan for 2026. Beyond just new buildings, the retailer is investing hundreds of millions of dollars into store payroll and training to ensure better service.

“Guests tell us all the time they want a Target closer to home, and this investment helps us do exactly that,” Adrienne Costanzo, Target’s chief stores officer said in a release.

For New Jersey shoppers, this means more than just new aisles. The West Orange location alone is expected to employ approximately 280 team members, providing a significant boost to the local job market.

The 2026 rollout emphasizes speed and convenience. Residents near the new stores will benefit from:

  • Next-Day Delivery: Expanding to reach 60% of the U.S. population this year.

  • Enhanced Drive Up: Featuring specialized lanes for faster curbside service.

  • Redesigned Layouts: Modern, open-layout designs that have already seen a 92% guest satisfaction rate in pilot markets.

With these two additions, Target continues to solidify its footprint in New Jersey, marking the West Orange site as the company’s 55th store in the state.
