‘The Lucy’ brings historic charm and modern luxury to Jersey City

A groundbreaking development is set to redefine luxury living in Jersey City, blending the rich history of a neighborhood with the sophistication of modern urban design. SJP Properties, in partnership with Claremont Development and Battery Global Advisors, has announced the development of “The Lucy,” a 444-unit luxury rental community located at 619 Grove Street.

The project, which is being developed with equity partner PCCP and financed by Kennedy Wilson, is more than just a new residential building. It is a landmark project that pays homage to the site’s past by preserving and restoring historically significant portions of its original church, rectory, and school. This careful integration, led by the award-winning firm Michael Graves Architecture, will create a seamless blend of heritage and contemporary living.

The development of The Lucy is the culmination of a larger, community-focused effort. It follows the successful completion in 2023 of a 165-bed transitional housing facility, which was built in partnership with the Archdiocese of Newark and Catholic Charities. This earlier phase of the project addressed a critical community need, demonstrating the developers’ commitment to the neighborhood’s welfare before embarking on this final phase of the development.

Rising 24 stories, The Lucy will offer 431 market-rate and 13 affordable apartments, all designed to the highest standards. The residences, with interiors crafted by Mary Cook Associates, will feature premium finishes, including quartz countertops, top-brand appliances, and solar shades.

Designed by Michael Graves Architecture, the 24-story tower will deliver 431 market-rate and 13 affordable apartments.

The true differentiator of The Lucy, however, is its extraordinary collection of amenities, which span both indoor and outdoor spaces. Residents will have access to a rooftop pool, a sky lounge, a sundeck with BBQs, and a penthouse bar with stunning skyline views of Manhattan. The project also boasts unique and compelling features like a bell tower speakeasy and a hydroponic garden, offering a one-of-a-kind living experience.

In addition to these resort-style features, the community will include a state-of-the-art fitness center, a media and game room, a coffee bar, and a Grab & Go market. Practical amenities for urban residents will include a dog grooming room, ample bicycle storage, and a shuttle service to the nearby PATH train station.

Steve Pozycki, founder and CEO of SJP Properties, expressed his pride in the project, stating, “We are proud to preserve the historic character of this site while creating a modern community that reflects Jersey City’s dynamic growth. The result will be a one-of-a-kind living experience with unmatched amenities and design.”

The Lucy stands as a testament to a strategic vision that combines thoughtful design, community partnership, and a deep understanding of the evolving urban real estate market.

Richard Sciaretta, managing partner of Claremont Development, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the project’s dual mission. “This project continues our work to bring much-needed housing to Jersey City while honoring the neighborhood’s history,” he said. “We’re excited to deliver a landmark development that blends heritage and modern living.”

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2025 and will be led by KL Masters Construction Company, a Harrison, New Jersey-based firm with a strong track record in the region.

The development of The Lucy stands as a testament to a strategic vision that combines thoughtful design, community partnership, and a deep understanding of the evolving urban real estate market. It represents not only a new address for Jersey City residents but also a new benchmark for how modern development can seamlessly integrate with and honor a community’s historical fabric.
