The Valley Hospital in Paramus recently received the Get With The Guidelines ® – Resuscitation from the American Heart Association, with a designation for Target: Survival.
This honor is distinguished for Valley’s specific commitment to treating in-hospital cardiac arrest incidents, ultimately with a goal of improving survival rates.
The Target: Survival program was developed to highlight the number of lives a hospital saved by following the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines for the treatment of cardiac arrest, as noted on the American Heart Association’s website.
The program examines patient survival rates following in-hospital cardiac arrest and adjusts for multiple factors, including cardiac arrest rhythm, event location within the hospital, and prior illness severity. Awarded sites have a survival rate that places them in the top 40% of all Get With The Guidelines – Resuscitation participating hospitals in the U.S.
Valley Health System CEO Robert Brenner explained the logistics and operations that go into these procedures.
“Every second counts when responding to a patient who is in cardiac arrest,” Brenner said. “Physicians and staff at The Valley Hospital are committed to providing timely intervention. This achievement award from the American Heart Association is a testament to our team’s continuous training and prompt intervention to care for our patients during these emergent medical situations.”
Each year, more than 300,000 adults and children experience an in-hospital cardiac arrest, according to the American Heart Association. Survival from cardiac arrest largely depends on timely medical emergency response and effective CPR. Cardiac arrest is the sudden loss of heart function. When the heart stops functioning, breathing stops, and the individual becomes unconscious.
