Virtua Health has become the first health system in New Jersey and the Greater Philadelphia region to offer a groundbreaking, minimally invasive weight-loss procedure using innovative magnetic technology.
The new technique, known as magnetic compression anastomosis, uses two small magnets to form a new connection in the small intestine, significantly reducing the need for traditional surgical cuts, stitches, or staples typically required during bariatric surgery.
The procedure utilizes the MagDI™ System by GT Metabolic™, which received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2024. The system gently brings two sections of the intestine together, creating a strong, natural, and lasting connection that heals without leaving foreign materials behind, as the body naturally expels the magnets after the connection is formed.
This magnetic duodeno-ileostomy surgery, a “malabsorption” procedure, is designed to limit the body’s absorption of calories. It is offered in conjunction with a traditional, “restrictive” surgery that reduces stomach size.
“This is a major advancement in bariatric care,” Dr. Samuel Wasser, director of bariatric surgery at Virtua Health said. “We are offering patients a safer, gentler option with excellent outcomes and faster recovery—and we are the 17th health system nationwide to provide this new treatment option.”
The MagDI™ procedure offers several significant benefits over conventional surgical methods:
-
Reduced Risk: It minimizes the risk of leaks or bleeding at the connection site.
-
Minimally Invasive: It does not pierce tissue; one magnet is swallowed by the patient, and the other is placed by the surgeon via a scope.
Dr. Emeka Acholonu, bariatric surgeon, noted, “Virtua Health continues to lead the region in adopting cutting-edge technologies that improve patient outcomes and enhance the surgical experience.”
Drs. Wasser and Acholonu are the only surgeons currently providing this advanced service in the state and the Greater Philadelphia region. The MagDI™ procedure is covered by most health insurance plans.
