SJI lands 2026 ‘Companies That Care’ award for record-breaking volunteerism

As National Volunteer Month draws to a close, SJI (South Jersey Industries) is celebrating a major milestone in corporate citizenship. The energy infrastructure company announced today that it has been honored with the 2026 Companies That Care Award for Volunteering & Community Service by the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey (CIANJ).

The award, presented during a ceremony at the Glen Ridge Country Club earlier this month, recognizes SJI’s extensive efforts to strengthen the Garden State through a combination of “boots-on-the-ground” volunteerism and a robust $1 million annual charitable giving program.

The core of SJI’s recognition lies in the sheer volume of its employee engagement. In 2025 alone, SJI employees and its various Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) logged an extraordinary 3,335 volunteer hours. These hours were dedicated to high impact causes across the state, including environmental cleanups, the Annual MLK Day of Service, charity walks, and initiatives focused on food security.

“Service is at the heart of who we are as a company and an integral part of our culture,” Brittany Lee Lewis, DEI+B Program Manager at SJI said. “This award is a testament to the generosity, compassion, and leadership our employees show when they step up for our communities.”

Beyond physical service, SJI and its subsidiaries—South Jersey Gas and Elizabethtown Gas—operate an annual Employee Giving Campaign that utilizes a dollar-for-dollar corporate match to maximize impact.

Pledges made during the 2025 campaign are set to support five key New Jersey organizations throughout 2026:

  • Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ): Tackling regional food insecurity.
  • New Jersey Veterans Network: Supporting the state’s military community.
  • The Nature Conservancy: Advancing local environmental conservation.
  • American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE): Focusing on the South Jersey Chapter’s mission.
  • New Jersey Association of Counties (NJAC): Supporting county-level initiatives and scholarships.

“Being named a 2026 Companies That Care honoree speaks volumes about the organization’s commitment to the communities it serves,” Jamie Grill-Goodman, Editor of Commerce magazine said. “SJI has demonstrated that engaged employees drive meaningful impact.”

To mark National Volunteer Month, SJI recently hosted a special celebration for its Employee Resource Groups to reflect on a year of successes. The event featured networking and presentations from each group, highlighting the diversity of causes supported by the Folsom-based team.
