Local leaders and community partners gathered this week for an exclusive first look at Target’s newest location at 381 Route 440, signaling a significant retail expansion for Jersey City’s Ward A. The store, which officially opens its doors to the public on May 17, is poised to become a major economic and service hub for the area.
The preview event showcased a facility tailored to the needs of the growing Jersey City population, emphasizing a larger grocery footprint and a suite of digital-first shopping services.
The opening of the Route 440 location brings a substantial employment boost to the region, with Target hiring 183 team members to staff the store.
The store’s leadership also reflects a deep local connection. Aneudy Rodriguez, a Jersey City resident and 16-year veteran of the company, has been named Store Director.
“Our team is focused on creating a shopping experience that is welcoming and easy,” Rodriguez said. “This new store gives us the opportunity to better serve Jersey City residents with the products, services, and everyday value they count on from Target.”
Recognizing the demand for fresh food in the community, the new Route 440 store features a larger food department than Target’s existing Jersey City location. This focus on “everyday essentials” is paired with several in-store amenities designed for one-stop shopping, including:
- CVS Pharmacy: Providing essential health and prescription services.
- Starbucks: Offering a full cafe menu for shoppers.
- Contactless Services: Full integration of Drive Up, Order Pickup, and Same-day Delivery with Shipt.
City officials and economic development leaders attended the preview to voice their support for the investment in the city’s western corridor.
“We are happy to see more jobs and access to resources expanding in the Ward A community of Jersey City,” Denise Ridley, Jersey City council president said. Ridley also offered a special congratulations to Rodriguez, highlighting the importance of having a local resident at the helm of the new operation.
Mira Prinz-Arey, executive director of the Jersey City Economic Development Corporation, emphasized that the store is more than just a retail outlet. “Target’s investment reinforces Jersey City as a great place to live, work, and play,” Prinz-Arey said. “The new store will bring jobs and added convenience for residents, while helping support our city’s long-term economic vitality.”
The new Route 440 Target is the latest addition to a rapidly developing retail landscape in Jersey City, reflecting a company-wide strategy to invest in urban markets with high population density and a demand for flexible shopping options.
