NJCU and Kean Jersey City establish campus consular hub to support Latin American visitors during FIFA World Cup

New Jersey City University (NJCU), Kean Jersey City, and the Grupo Latinoamericano de Cónsules en Nueva Jersey (GLACO) announced a sweeping new civic partnership to launch a temporary consular outreach center at the university’s Harborside campus during the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026™.

The strategic initiative, organized directly by the university’s Guarini Institute for International Education & Economic Mobility, will provide critical on-site legal, informational, and emergency consular services for both local New Jersey residents and the massive influx of international soccer fans traveling into the region.

The physical consular hub will be situated at 200 Hudson Street (Harborside 2) in the heart of Jersey City. The announcement carries added institutional weight, as NJCU is currently finalizing a historic merger with Kean University to officially join the Kean system as “Kean Jersey City” on July 1.

Targeted Dates for International Diplomatic Support

Under the newly forged agreement, five prominent Latin American consulates will cycle through the Harborside campus to provide direct diplomatic support. The official operational calendar for participating nations is scheduled as follows:

  • Colombia: June 12, 15, 17, 23, 24, 26, 29; July 1, 6, 18, and 20.
  • Guatemala: June 15, 17, 23, 24, 26, 29; July 1, 6, 18, and 20.
  • Peru: June 13, 16, 22, 25, 27, and 30.
  • Mexico: June 15, 23, 26, 29; July 6 and 20.
  • Panama: June 25 and 26.

“The FIFA World Cup provides a unique opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the university and the Latin American consulates that serve thousands of residents across New Jersey,” Dr. Adrián Franco, executive director of the Guarini Institute said. “This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to community engagement, international cooperation, and expanding educational and economic opportunities.”

A Growing Coalition: Originally founded in 2017 by five core nations, GLACO has expanded its unified diplomatic voice to include 16 member countries, spanning from Argentina and Brazil to the Dominican Republic and Honduras.

The tournament-specific hub builds upon a foundational Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between NJCU and GLACO in December 2023, which was designed to enhance long-term economic mobility and educational access for Hispanic communities across the Garden State.

Mariana Diaz, head consul of the Consulate of Mexico in New Brunswick and the current Chair of GLACO, expressed deep gratitude for the university’s swift mobilization ahead of the international tournament.

“GLACO is grateful for Kean University and New Jersey City University’s willingness and enthusiasm to host a Consular Hub that will grant participating countries a space where we can provide information, guidance, and general consular assistance during the World Cup,” Diaz said.

The partnership is slated to extend well beyond the conclusion of the sporting event. Campus officials confirmed that during the upcoming 2026-2027 academic year, Kean Jersey City and GLACO will debut a series of joint initiatives, including international student internship placements, collaborative cultural programming, and specialized bilingual higher education enrollment campaigns.
