DoorDash donates $2K in community credits to fight food insecurity at Passaic CC

Students fighting food insecurity issue is more prevalent than many realize

In a continuing effort to fight an issue that is bigger than many realize, DoorDash on Monday announced that they are making a $2,000 donation in Community Credits to Passaic County Community College to support students facing food insecurity.

Students experiencing hunger-related challenges gained more visibility in December, following the nationwide pause of SNAP benefits — especially coming during the holiday season.

Although SNAP benefits have been reinstated, the disruption underscored the vulnerability that many college students face. DoorDash addressed the issue by donating credits, in the form of gift cards, to ensure PCCC students have access to meals and essential items.

Passaic County Community College President Steven Rose was grateful that DoorDash stepped up.

“We believe that no student should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from while they work towards achieving their goals,” he said. “DoorDash’s support strengthens our ability to show up for students when they need it most. We’re grateful for this contribution and for partners who share our commitment to eliminating barriers to student success.”

PCCC, similar to community colleges across the state, continues to see a growing need among students as hunger and affordability remain barriers to academic success. DoorDash’s donation will bolster PCCC’s longstanding efforts to provide students with flexible resources and support during a time when many are struggling to meet their basic needs.

Ivan Garcia, DoorDash’s Head of New York and New Jersey Public Engagement, was glad the company was able to do its part.

“We’re proud to support Passaic County Community College as they work to make sure students have the resources they need inside and outside of the classroom,” he said. “Students should not have to think about whether they’ll have enough to eat while trying to focus on school. Fighting hunger has always been central to DoorDash’s mission, and we’re honored to partner with PCCC to support students during this time.”

Congresswoman Nellie Pou and State Sen. Benjie Wimberly offered thanks, too.

“With rising costs straining students across New Jersey, ensuring access to affordable meals has never been more important,” Poe said. “I commend DoorDash and Passaic County Community College for stepping up to support students’ well-being. Their partnership demonstrates how community-based solutions can help tackle food insecurity in our neighborhoods.”

Wimberly said it’s part of a it-takes-a-village approach.

“Ending hunger among college students takes collaboration and proactive solutions,” he said. “I applaud DoorDash and PCCC for their partnership and for working together to address the pressing challenges students are facing. Efforts like these are essential to ensure that every student has a fair shot at success.”
