How Family Success Institute is helping to create best environments for children

Nonprofit, based in East Orange, aims to show succeeding as a family unit is a right, not a privilege

Location

East Orange

Leader

Tim Carden, executive director

Origin

The Family Success Institute was formally established in 2013, prompted by the tragic death of an 8-year-old boy in Newark after the failure of numerous public and private agencies involved in his care.

Mission/Vision

Its mission is to assure that all families have what they need to succeed as a right, not a privilege. Its vision is for every family and community to successfully raise their children from birth to young adulthood and beyond.

Key Programs

  • Statewide community action advocacy training forums
  • Broadcasting community voices
  • Learning Community Group, a statewide collaboration of 100-plus residents, service organizations and businesses

Biggest event/fundraiser

An online Rally for Residents, attended by more than 100 people, to call attention to and share their experiences, and to point the way forward for families and communities.

Supporters/Donors

Community Foundation of New Jersey, Center for Family Services, The Schumann Fund, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

One More Thing

For too long, government has devoted resources to treating distress rather than investing in success. FSI advocates for finding smarter, proactive ways to invest in support and services that strengthen New Jersey’s families and communities: “Invest in Success, Divest from Distress.”
