Middlesex County sweeps 15th Annual Capital Construction Awards for Visionary ‘CIO Plan’ projects

Middlesex County’s ambitious roadmap for the future earned statewide acclaim this week at the 15th Annual New Jersey’s Leading Capital Construction Projects Awards.

Hosted by the New Jersey Alliance for Action, the ceremony recognized the County for two transformative “cornerstone” projects currently rising on the campus of Middlesex College: the Middlesex County Innovation Magnet School and the Multipurpose Community Venue and Student Center.

Both initiatives are central to the County’s Community, Innovation, and Opportunity (CIO) Strategic Investment Plan, a long-term vision designed to turn the college campus into a regional powerhouse for education, the arts, and economic development.

The awards highlight the County’s transition into New Jersey’s second-most populous county, now home to roughly 900,000 residents.

“These projects represent the future we are building in Middlesex County—one rooted in innovation, access, and opportunity for every resident,” Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald Rios said. “We are making bold, strategic investments that strengthen our education pipeline and position our County as a leader in economic development.”

The recognized projects serve distinct but complementary roles:

  • Innovation Magnet School: Designed to advance workforce development and STEM education (Broke ground March 2025).
  • Multipurpose Community Venue: A versatile space that will host community events and serve as the new home for Rutgers University’s baseball team (Broke ground January 2025).
  • Student Center: A modern hub for student life and engagement at Middlesex College (Broke ground January 2025).

Jerry Keenan, president of the Alliance for Action, praised the County leadership for their proactive planning. “The Innovation Magnet School and Multipurpose Community Venue and Student Center are both part of the County’s critical strategic investment plan… The Alliance commends Commissioner Director Rios and his colleagues for their foresight!”

Commissioner Chanelle Scott McCullum, chair of the Economic Development Committee, added that these spaces are intentionally designed to serve “multiple generations and multiple purposes,” from expanding access to the arts to creating new recreational outlets.

While the award-winning projects are already under construction, the CIO Strategic Investment Plan includes several upcoming phases aimed at further enhancing the quality of life in Middlesex County:

  • Destination Athletic Complex: Set to feature 14 multi-sport synthetic fields, 16 tennis courts, and a state-of-the-art recreational cricket field at Thomas A. Edison Park.
  • Workforce Development and Conference Center: Aimed at strengthening the local labor market.
  • Community Park: Featuring educational children’s amenities and public art installations.
