Englewood Health has once again been recognized as one of the elite thoracic surgery programs in the U.S. and Canada, earning the prestigious 3-star rating—the highest possible score—for patient care and outcomes in lung cancer resection from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).
This marks the second consecutive year that Englewood Health has received this top designation, which evaluates hospitals based on exceptional surgical outcomes.
The “better-than-expected” composite quality rating places Englewood Health among the top approximately 10% of programs for general thoracic surgery participating in the STS General Thoracic Surgery Database.
“Receiving this top rating for the second year in a row is a reflection of our team’s consistency and dedication,” Dr. Christos Stavropoulos, director of thoracic oncology at The Lefcourt Family Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center and chief of thoracic surgery at Englewood Health said. “Our thoracic surgeons, interventional pulmonologists, nurses, anesthesiologists, and perioperative staff all play a role in ensuring patients receive the safest, most advanced surgical care possible.”
The 3-star quality score indicates that Englewood Health’s performance on lung cancer resection is statistically significantly higher than expected for its specific case-mix, demonstrating superior results compared to national benchmarks.
The latest analysis of data for lung cancer resection covered a three-year period, from July 2022 to June 2025.
Dr. DavidShahian, chair of the STS Task Force on Quality Measurement, praised the achievement: “The Society of Thoracic Surgeons congratulates STS National Database participants who have received three-star ratings. Only a very small percentage of participants nationally achieve this important recognition.”
