Massive 5G boost hits New Jersey: AT&T deploys spectrum on over 1,000 new sites in Metro area

AT&T recently launched a substantial enhancement to its 5G network across the New Jersey/New York City Metro Area, integrating newly acquired mid-band spectrum from EchoStar.

This rapid deployment promises to deliver a stronger, faster wireless connection for customers across the state, with download speeds increasing by up to 80% for mobile users.

The New Jersey region is a primary focus of this accelerated upgrade, which involves adding over 1,000 new cell sites across the broader metropolitan area.

The network expansion includes a heavy concentration in key New Jersey urban centers and suburbs, directly improving capacity in high-traffic areas.

  • Newark is receiving 30 new cell sites.

  • Jersey City is getting 25 new sites.

  • Elizabeth is adding 10 new sites.

  • Further coverage is expanding into North and Central New Jersey, including Passaic, Hoboken, Orange, Paramus and Montclair.

AT&T successfully deployed the 3.45 GHz spectrum to nearly 23,000 cell sites nationwide in a matter of weeks, marking a record-fast integration. This new mid-band spectrum provides the ideal balance of speed and coverage necessary for dense population centers like New Jersey.

“We’ve put EchoStar spectrum to work on our network and customers are already feeling the difference,” Jeff McElfresh, chief operating officer, AT&T said. “This gives us the runway to expand availability of AT&T Internet Air for consumers and businesses and add even more download speed to our 5G service.”

Enhanced services and reliability

The integration of this new spectrum directly benefits both mobility customers and those using AT&T Internet Air, the company’s 5G-based home internet service. Customers across the state can expect:

  • Increased Capacity for streaming, gaming, and AI-powered applications.

  • Expansion of Home Internet Options backed by the same reliable network.

  • Improved First Responder Connectivity via FirstNet®, Built with AT&T, which utilizes this enhanced spectrum for public safety.

By optimizing its network with this new spectrum, AT&T expects to reduce the need for capital-intensive construction of additional cell sites in the long term, supporting its mission to deliver a high-performance, converged network experience.
