Onkos Surgical opens NanoCept Innovation Center in Bridgewater

Onkos Surgical, a Parsippany-based provider of complex orthopaedic solutions, has reinforced its commitment to New Jersey’s life sciences sector with the opening of the NanoCept Innovation Center in Bridgewater Township.

The new 4,600-square-foot facility, located in the New Jersey Center of Excellence Campus, will bring the full innovation and manufacturing process in-house for the company’s flagship product: NanoCept® Antibacterial Technology. This proprietary coating is the first orthopaedic antibacterial coating commercially available on the U.S. market, designed to help surgeons proactively mitigate the risk of bacterial contamination on implants during surgery.

The NanoCept technology represents a crucial advancement in orthopaedics, addressing the serious issue of intraoperative bacterial contamination, which can lead to severe post-surgical complications. The production expansion in Bridgewater is necessary to meet the growing demand from surgeons and hospitals for the technology.

“Onkos is proud to have worked with the FDA to bring to market the first antibacterial coating technology,” Patrick Treacy, founder and CEO of Onkos Surgical said. “This investment will allow us to get this groundbreaking technology into the hands of more surgeons, faster, and it puts us in a position to help more patients with complex orthopaedic conditions.”

Dr. Steven Gitelis, chief medical officer of Onkos, emphasized the clinical value, calling NanoCept a “unique technology that arms us, as surgeons, with a powerful solution to help mitigate the serious issue of bacteria in the operating room.”

The new center will employ a team of chemists, engineers, and technicians, furthering Onkos Surgical’s investment in the state. The company’s headquarters remain in Parsippany, making this facility a strategic addition that strengthens its presence in the New Jersey region.

The opening was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Dec. 9, attended by local officials and state leaders, including representatives from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) and the New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA).

Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. praised the investment, stating, “Advancements like those being pursued by Onkos Surgical have the potential to drive meaningful progress in patient care and expand possibilities in modern medicine.”
